However, a tho rough study of the fol lowing inform ation should pr ovide a better understandin g of p roper installatio n, maintena nce, and inspection pr ocedures that are to be f ollowed in order to af ford a greater m argin of safety for people and m achinery in the are a of hoist operations. It m ust be r ecogniz ed that this is a manual of recommenda tions for the Hoist Installation, M aintenance, and Inspection personnel and its use is permiss iv e n ot m andatory. It is the res ponsibility of the hoist o wner to mak e personnel aware of all f ederal, state, and local codes an d regulations. T he owner is resp onsible for providing instruction a nd insuring that c ertain installatio n, maintenance, and inspection personnel are properly trained. Safety Read and unde rstand this manual befo re using the hoist. These i ssues are ind icated by DANGER, WARNING, or CA UT ION instructions or placards that al ert personnel to po tential hazards, pro per operation, load lim itations, and m ore. Taking preceden ce over any specific rule, however, is the most important r ule of all: USE COMM ON SENSE It is a responsi bility of the hoist owner user to establis h programs to: 1. T rain and designate hoist inspectors m aint enance p ersonnel. The words SH A LL and S HOULD are used thr oughout this manual in acc ordance with definitions in the ASME B30 stan dards as follows: SHALL indicates a r ule is mandatory and m ust be followed. SHOULD indicates a rule is a recom mendation, the advisabilit y of which dep ends o n t he f acts in each situat ion. Hoist op eration, hoist insp ection, and hoist m aintenance personnel training program s should be based on requirements in accordance with th e latest edition of: ASME B30.16 Safety Standa rd for Overhead Hoists ( Underhung ) Such tr aining sh ould also provide inform ation for compliance with any Federal, St ate, or Local Code requirements, an d existing plant s afety rules and regu lations. If the h oist is installed as part of a total lifting system, it i s also the responsibi lity of the ow ner u ser to co mply w ith the applicable ASME B30 volu me that add resses other types of equipment used in the system. If the h oist is installed as part of a total lifting system, all personnel must also read the applicable AS M E B30 volume that addresses other types of equipment used in the system. Konecranes has no direct involvement or control over the hoists op eration and application. Conform ing to good safet y prac tices is the responsi bility of the owner, the user, and its operatin g personnel. The owner user SHALL insure that all O perators read and u nderstand the XN Electric Chain Hoist Operators M anual prior to operatin g the hoist. ![]() Failure to com ply with safety preca utions in this manual and on the hoist is a saf ety violation that ma y result in serious injur y, death, or propert y dam age.
